How much do I love my little kids?
Honestly, they're adorable. And smart. I teach kindergarten kids in the mornings from 10-2, then junior kids in the afternoons (2 or 3 classes with breaks in between), so things are pretty laid back. My kindi kids are Korean age 7, which is Canadian age 5 or 6. There are 10 of them, and considering that this is their second language, are doing GREAT. I teach them math, phonics, conversation, English, Cooking (oh, the humour in this one... hey kiddies, just eat whatever vegetable is on sale this week raw), Science, Arts and Crafts, Music, manners, and how to be good people. It's a total blast. These kids are WAY smarter than I recall 5 or 6 year old Canadian kids being. For example: Today we were doing phonics, and the "ay" sound was the focus. So of course, the word "pray" is in there; I write it on the board, the kids all shout "PRAY!!!!!", and I ask, "What does PRAY mean?". Nine of them put their hands together like they were praying (in the expected manner). The last one yells :NONONO. THIS IS PRAYING TOO: and gets down on the floor. The kid looked like he was in a Muslim Prayer room. Now, these kids pray the usual Christian way at lunchtime everyday (as a song), and for this one 5/6 year old boy to first of all understand the word, and also apply it to other religions, AND acknowledge that there is more than one way to pray is awesome.
Most of them talk like little Canadian 5 or 6 year olds, in incomplete sentences, fragments, and some garbled messages. They're just so smart though!
They love to tattle on each other, and I don't know what I hate more, the tattling, or the TERRIBLE English that they use when they're would up and tattling on each other. So now we spend the last half an hour of the class correcting their wonky English. They all know how to correct what they're saying too! One of them was yelling "Teacher these what????" today, so when I was asking how to correct the English, he looked at me and said "Kathryn Teacher, What are these? Kathryn Teacher, what are those? Kathryn Teacher, what is this? Kathryn Teacher, what is that?" Hello, did you just conjugate that on your own?
Then at the end of the day, as they're leaving, one by one, they pass by me and say "I love you Kathryn Teacher" or "Goodnight Kathryn Teacher". It's just to sweet.
